Sizing Down Interior Doors

Pre-hung interior doors are sized to allow a 3/4inch gap in the middle of the bottom of the door and the floor. Most contemporary interiors doors are of the hollow-core type with a solid wood frame. This gap is to allow the door to swing freely without binding on the concluded floor. If the door does not fit the height of the rough opening, the door must be cut off to fit the opening.

Once the whole bottom frame member is cut off to shorten the door, the bottom piece that was cut off must be reinserted to close the door cavity.

Door Bottom

1) After removing the door from the hinges. Suspect the thickness of the concluded floor exterior and add 3/4 inch to that measurement.

2) replacement that measurement to the bottom of the door. Measure both bottom ends and scribe a line over the whole width of the door. ( Use a sharp utility knife).

3) Measure the length from the end of the circular saw guide-plate to the blade.

4) Now replacement this measurement and make a mark on both ends of the door exactly from the scribed mark and clamp a level edge. The level edge will serve as a guide for the circular saw to rest against while sawing.

5) Saw off bottom of the door. The hollow core of the door might be exposed after the cut is made. If this is the case, you will need to replace the bottom frame.

6) To replace the bottom frame, chisel the veneer off the cut-off frame, cut it to fit tight in the middle of the side frames of the door. Apply glue to both sides of the cut-off frame and insert it into opening. Wipe off excess glue and let dry preferably over night.

There you have it folks! That was not so difficult. Was it?
